San Jan Mission of San Antonio TX

The city of San Antonio is one of Texas’ oldest European settlements.  With its winding river banked up against a vast valley of unexplored land, the Spaniards organized expeditions and began building missions along the San Antonio River in the early 1700s.

The Mission San Juan was completed by 1756, with a fortress rock wall, church, farming aqueduct systems, and living quarters for its self-sustaining community.  Remnants of the dream for building a large church can still be seen today, which was halted after epidemics of smallpox.

The landscape, vegetation, and historical visitor center really helped to imagine what life would have been like here 300 years ago.
